Good point. I found your YouTube video searching for "I hate Apple". I feel inundated by Apple fundamentalism. Ha! I never really thought of Apple fanboys as zealots, but that's a pretty good description of some that I've dealt with in the past. So what was the final solution to the problem with the FCP install? Sounded like a bad disk (CD or DVD), but if you were able to install with those after the Apple call then it probably wasn't.

I'm glad Apple support helped you out. I've had good and bad experiences with them. I'd imagine, though, that for the cost of FCP, they probably have some of their better people on there for those problems.

I get the idea that "Steve" was being facetious and making fun of the "Apple Way." At least I really hope he was.

Anyway, I am a longtime user of Macs, and a reformed Apple fanatic. I still use the machines, and get overly excited at new products, but I'm not going to get into any flame wars about it any more. It's just not worth the time.

I liked the video, by the way. When you mentioned 1369, it startled me. :) (I live in Somerville.)

Thanks for writing this. I'm a long-time IT professional who's supported both PC's and Macs. I like Macs for what they can do (Final Cut!) but I can't quite separate that from the zealotry that's about.

Regarding the earlier comment about Marketing vs. Engineering, it isn't that you confused the two as much as it is that *Apple* does, at least in its public persona.

In "Infinite Loop", Michael Malone relates a tale from Apple's PR firm. As we know, most PR firms spin up the bull, er, the hyperbole, for public consumption.

According to the PR person Malone quotes, Jobs not only spun things, he actually *believed* his own bullshit!

The tech you spoke to was no bullshitter; Apple machines do break; their software does have bugs. Any real tech knows that.

But the fans are not encouraged to see things as they are.

Yeah, I experienced random shutdown syndrome and lost the use of my Mac for a month and the worst part was listening to Apple zealots insist that I must have gotten the only faulty one of the millions of Macbooks that were made.

I hate it when some idiot that never spent one second doing graphic design tells me "well you know, Macs are better for graphics". Yeah, 10 years ago when pc's shipped without a decent video card or any processor speed or RAM, Macs were better.

Don't believe the hype. Apple's had a lot of time to catch up to attain decent market share and they haven't. Having said that however, Gates can have my iPod when he pries it from my cold, dead fingers!

Wow. Apparently being a critic of Mac is like being a pied piper for douchebags.

I was a Mac man well before they'd become the darling of the coffeehouse set. I actually bought into their "pirate" propaganda and swallowed the David v. Goliath bullshit whole.

Then I realized that Apple and Microsoft are both big corporations that want my money, and no matter what computer or operating system I use, it doesn't have anything whatsoever to do with what kind of person I am.

People who tie their identity to a product, be it a Mac, a big truck, or a sports franchise are nothing but suckers.

If you get lots of zealots attacking you for this post, I'll just have to say you brought it on yourself. Your first post just brought out the typical Mac zealots. Say anything wrong about Apple and they will attack, whether you're a Mac user or not. I've written enough articles criticising Apple to know that some people just don't see any faults at all (the same can be said for some PC users when I criticise Microsoft).

However, this post is purely spiteful and a sign of inexperience (most of the time I see these sorts of posts are when people get the wrath of the Mac zealots for the first time). I have sympathy for you over your first post, but for this one I believe you deserve whatever you get. If I went on a rant and wrote an article titled "All PC users are pedophiles" I would expect a huge backlash, and to be honest, if I did that I would deserve said backlash.

It's one thing to criticise zealots, it's a completely different thing to sink to their level
