I've lived in Boston for most of my life and there are great things happening and some not so great things too. Remember Boston has various small towns that surrounds it i.e. Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan, Hyde Park, Roslindale, Dedham and the list goes on. To just say Boston itself is just too general. True the people of "Boston" must stick together to better defiine it, but like any other city things happen. People choose this place to live for great reasons i.e. colleges are execellant, job market is hott, great sites and very historical and diversity. Great leaders have paved the way for many Boston residents. In regards to radio, well as everyone knows the same songs are played on the radio and that's crazy, so people customize their own message and remain cool with that. It's just the way the world turns. We will soon be paperless for money and then who will we blame. Don't shy away from a great experience by living, shopping, dining and wonderful enterainment that Boston, MA has to offer. Oh, living in the Boston may be pricey, but what large city isn't. There's always other options for find an apartment or a house. There are lots of towns that are on the outskirts of Boston and by car or by a wide variety of local transportation getting to and from Boston will not be an issue. I STILL LOVE BEANTOWN.

Re: Boston continues to scare young black people away

I would hardly say we're "stashed away" in Roxbury and Dorchester. Roxbury is only 3 miles from downtown Boston which makes it closer than most of the rest of the city.

Jadedea, if one blogpost is gonna scare you away from Boston before you get to know the city, that's sad. Sounds like you're more than a little paranoid already.

Re: Boston continues to scare young black people away

whew im glad i came across this article!

My husband and i (both black) were thinking of moving to boston, but after reading this article i know this is not the place for us. we would just be unhappy and paranoid and for once id like to not be paranoid!

Re: Boston continues to scare young black people away

I am a minority living in Boston. I have to say - if it was economically viable, there would be an Urban station. I don't think hip hop is exactly turning our youths into Rhodes scholars, but that's a discussion for a different day.

Re: Boston continues to scare young black people away

I am thinking about moving to Boston. Does anyone have anything good to say about the city for minorities?

Re: Boston continues to scare young black people away

Boston isn't to blame for the loss of WILD. Black folks listened to and supported WILD for decades before it was even an "urban format" station. The loss of the station falls completely on the shoulders of the owners of Radio One. They sold us out for a quick profit. But, as Borderline said, this is an opportunity for someone else.

Re: Boston continues to scare young black people away

Solid point Krissy. I should have been the one to say that! I mean, there's a reason I didn't listen to radio that much anyway.

with iPods and satellite radio and podcasts, who needs commercial-filled AM/FM junk?

Re: Boston continues to scare young black people away

This could also be looked at as part of the downfall of traditional radio. I personally have low tolerance for the radio, with the exception of the occassional WERS (love that Jazz Oasis block!)...I lived in San Francisco before here and the radio station selection was laughable there as well. I wonder if people are turning to satellite things like XM and Sirius or DRM options. Maybe classic rock stations create more revenue because a lot of their listeners might of a less tech-savvy generation.

Just thinking aloud here, anyway.

Re: Boston continues to scare young black people away

Good point, borderline. Too much bad rock radio. Wasup with competition in formats?? boooo urns.

Re: Boston continues to scare young black people away

lotta hockey players and fans in boston. this is canada's miami for pete's sake.

bad lynrd skynard. they played the RNC?!

Re: Boston continues to scare young black people away

That's too bad about WILD. On the other hand, sounds like an opportunity to me. Urban *is* the hottest thing, and rock is fading ... yet Boston has how many rock stations? 100.7, 101.7, 103.3, 104.1, 105.7, 107.3 and now WILD?
