It reminds me of the "black panel" in your book, which I loved and have read several times. I was brought up in a white, middle class, extremely racist family, but for some reason, even as a small child, have always (thankfully) been sensitive, horrified and disgusted by racist beliefs and actions. (As you might imagine, it has always caused me more than a few problems with my parents and siblings in particular).

However, with regard to racist language in general and the n-word in particular, it does grate on me when anyone uses it, but I figure if a black person chooses to use it, well, that's up to him or her. That person knows what's in their heart and knows what they mean. But it pisses me off when a white person uses it and uses the excuse "well the blacks call themselves that!." First of all, the white person saying it almost never uses it in the presence of black people, assuming that no white person will be offended (not true, I am as are many others), or have black family members (also not true, I do).

Second, as any person hopefully learns at a young age in Manners 101, just as I can criticize or make fun of my family, others had better tread lightly in those waters, or as Ta-Nahisi Coates said in your answer, " It tells white people that, for all their guns and all their gold, there will always be places they can never go.” I totally agree, and finally at my advanced age (64) have overcome my shyness and can easily call out racist language.

Thanks for letting me express my opinion.

Linda

Re:

I'm a Nigerian Yoruba man. Just saw you on an old edition of Real Time with Bill Maher on YouTube. Of course the name set me immediately thinking "hey, a Yoruba man!" Then I noticed the "r" in place of "b" and I just had to hit Google. The spelling might have compromised the meaning but reading this page has (for me) given the name all the beauty and meaning there could be. My own name is Babajide, which is same in meaning and origin as Babatunde. I was named for my grandfather. The first male to be born in the family after the death of a patriarch usually gets the name. I don't understand how the name could be interpreted to mean "the one that is chosen" (or "the chosen one") in Yoruba though. In any case, your mum totally nailed it by finding you an African name with such deep meaning. Now I have to find your book and read it.

Re: Local Chicago news paints four year-old black boy as gun-lover - Blog - baratunde.com

Two peanuts were walking in the street. After a racist-vandalism incident directed at one student of color, his family and mine are trying to get the school to take a deep look at how racially hostile the environment has become for our kids (of color) and to promote positive change. But, the principal and admin. staff have told us, "This is a generational difference...you and I might find it offensive, but this generation doesn't." How do I wake them the heck up and impress on them how painful and offensive this really is? In this day and age...I am afraid it will only get worse if we don't take direct action to make it better. I would love to hear your thoughts....

Re:

America was founded on community--well, for some people, sorry about that, native peoples and enslaved Africans--but along comes Ralph Waldo Emerson and his "Self-Reliance" and we move on to rugged individualism to today where it seems rank self-interest is the engine of our culture (I use the term loosely.). I wish I could remember the author of the essay in Best American Essays of 2012 or 2013 who blew me away with this take on the hallowed 19th C essay. You and he should get together. Oh, right, I can't remember his name. Ben something, I think. Anyway, your comments were much appreciated by me.
